Website Watch – Joobili

by Simon on August 12, 2009

joobiliIf you were to put your money on one of the many of the travel startups launched this year to start turning in a steady and tidy profit which one would it be? I’m sure that one of the safer bets would be Joobili, simply because you can easily see how it can make money and it’s very good at what it does.

Launched in January of this year by Jared Salter and Tamas Gabor, Joobili probably isn’t aimed at someone like me who has to factor small children into his travel plans. I would however have loved to have used Joobili when I had a combination of disposable income and free weekends (those were the days!)

Joobili turns on its head the way people book and plan trips. Working on the assumption that people have no idea where they want to go, but want something to do on their trip, Joobili takes the dates you can travel via its nifty slider and suggests festivals and cultural/sporting events of interest. The selection can be narrowed down by category and each experience is rated by members (“Joobiliers”).

The site will soon be upgrading its event details page to include full reviews of events/festivals, similar events/festivals and deeper integration with the Flickr and Google map APIs as well as 3rd party widgets for other activities in the destination, weather forecast, etc. There will also be some travel-related ads for tours, hotels, etc. I’m sure the authority and comprehensive nature of the site will appeal to advertisers. Joobili aim to be the first stop for travel inspiration for “those who know when but not where”. It is certainly an interesting site for those with an open mind and a sense of adventure.

Great to see a fresh approach to providing events information. I think the Joobili guys have done a good job with design and interface, but if you want deep quality content with global coverage, I think we still have the best site out there – http://www.whatsonwhen.com.

Feedback welcome.
