The  NY Times ventures to Grenada (nice article, great photos), Katmandu and makes maple syrup in Quebec, where 75% of the world’s supply comes from. There’s also snorkeling in Maui and skiing in New Hampshire.

The Guardian has its budget travel edition. Rolf Potts writes about travelling on a shoestring, there’s a visit to Bozcaada (a Turkish island in The Aegean) and it’s Week 398 of Danny’s dire Big Adventure. Will it ever end?

In The Telegraph, David Atkinson rides the Glacier Express (there’s lots of snow and the trains run on time).

The Times goes all Darwin 150th anniversary with the Galapagos Islands.  The Rev Peter Owen Jones goes to the Himalayas, and there’s walking in Cairo. Think going skiing in China will be a good idea? It isn’t. Otherwise, it’s families all the way. Think taking a two year-old on a truffle hunt in Italy will be a good idea? It isn’t. Can a family holiday to Japan work? Yes.  Matt Rudd takes his young family to the Dolomites in the summer.

The FT does slum tourism in Mumbai and it smells. There’s more Darwin in Chile.

The Irish Independent go to St. Lucia and stay at the old Jalousie Hilton, which is now just the Jalousie.

In The Independent, there’s Swaziland, skiing in Jackson Hole and Formigal (again) and a road trip around Croatia, Hungary and Slovenia.

Today it’s from TUI saying 87% of their sample intend to travel overseas this year, with a staggering 94% of those taking a package holiday. I can’t see it happening myself, but it will be great for the industry if it does. But the numbers just don’t add up to me, and unless companies are prepared to publish more information about sample sizes and demographics, such surveys are virtually meaningless.

The Telegraph, however, took the PR and ran with it.

1. In a month full of articles about Washington DC, Rupert Cornwell’s in The Independent stood out from the crowd.

2. There were also a lot of ski articles in January. Charles Starmer-Smith had a slightly different approach to the norm in The Telegraph.

3. Andrew Mueller is always worth reading, and his piece about Addis Ababa in The FT was no exception.

4. Tony Perrottet’s piece about Margaret River in The Times, may not have been the best written, but it cracks along at a fair pace and anything that combines wine tasting and adventure sports is fine by me.

5. Stephen Wood skiing in Formigal in The Independent was fairly straightforward, but a good example of clear, concise travel writing.
