Despite the continuing troubles, Sri Lanka still doggedly attracts tourists and The FT visits the south of the island. There’s also Yegen, home of Gerald Brenan in Andalusia and Lijiang in China.

The NY Times stay at an organic farm just outside of Atlanta and do Venice on the cheap.

The Times heads to Eastern Europe with Vilnius and Tiblisi. There’s also Pompeii and Laax, one of Europe’s more forward-thinking ski resorts.

The Guardian also has Swiss skiing with Engelberg. There’s also Linz, Launceston Farm in Dorset and it’s finally the end of Danny’s Big Adventure. Hooray.

The FT visits Manzanar in the Californian desert which was an internment camp for 10,000 Japanese Americans in World War 2.  In 1988 President Reagan gave each of the 60,000 (there were 9 other camps) remaining camp survivors $20,000 and a letter saying sorry. Now it seems there is little left of the camps and few tourists make the trek deep into the desert. Also in The FT, another Nile Cruise and the top ski guides in Europe.

In The Independent Wayne Hemmingway takes his wife and four children on a trip across India taking in Delhi, Calcutta and plenty between the two. Susan Griffith goes to Australia’s Northern Territory (the wonderfully named Kakadu National Park) and there’s a rather uninspired skiing piece on Klosters.

The main piece in the NY Times is on Cape Town, concentrating on the surrounding areas rather than the town itself. There is a feature on the upmarket Cap Maison in St. Lucia and a look at Francis Bacon’s Madrid, where he died at the age of 82. There’s a look at Vail Mountain Club, one of a number of ski clubs in the US that are modelling themselves on golf clubs. The joining fee is $275,000!

In the Telegraph there’s trekking in Bhutan, off-piste skiing in Val d’Isere and another piece about Twitter in travel.

Mark Hodson goes to Ko Pha- Ngan in The Times and likes it. There’s also the Greek island of Kea and Robert Elms visits Mexico City and then heads to the coast.

It’s beach holidays in the Guardian with Ireland, St. Tropez and the blue train in South Africa.

The FT visits Banda Aceh which has been devastated by war and 2004′s tsunami, but appears to be making comeback. Andrew Jefford takes his young family to Singapore and Elizabeth Rigby goes birdwatching in Kenya.

In The Guardian Kevin Gould sails a dhow off the Kenyan coast. There’s skiing in Sweden and Danny’s never ending adventure goes on and on….

In The Times, Tom Chesshyre paints an overly grim picture of Havana. Billy Connolly plugs his book and upcoming tv series with a piece on Canada and AmyLame goes to buy a ring for her wedding, in Antwerp which is apparently a good place for doing such things.

The Austalian goes to Morocco’s Atlas Mountains, the newly opened California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco, Germany’s Eltz Castle and the Hebridean island of Mull.

In yet more Darwin anniversary writing, The Independent retrace Darwin’s voyage on the Beagle. The travel press are happy to tell us how tourists are threatening the Galapagos Islands, yet in this year of Darwin’s anniversary, promote them every week. The Independent also has the east coast of Barbados and, in light of BA’s new direct flight, St. Kitts.

The FT clearly feels The City is still flush with cash and visits the super expensive Vamizi, a private island off Mozambique. There’s also skiing in “Tornado Alley” which consists of five small “ski hills” in Minnesota, North and South Dakota, Iowa and Missouri. Unless you live nearby, I can’t see  much point in doing it, other than to say you’ve done it. There’s also a piece about The Fontainebleu Hotel in Miami.

Times must be tougher in The Big Apple as the NYT searches for affordable Antigua and ten other Caribbean destinations. There’s also the east end of  London, where they attribute all the changes in the area over the last ten years to the 2012 Olympics.

If cruising is your thing, they’re afloat this week at the LA Times and The Australian, where they take a Nile Cruise and a 13 day, 1800km cruise from St. Petersberg to Moscow.

Over at The Guardian, there’s another Nile Cruise. There’s also Corsica, The US-Mexico border, Morocco,  Skiing in Kitzbuhel & St. Moritz,  The Bahamas, Tenerife, camping in Sydney and Hanif Kureshi writing about Hanif Kureshi (there’s a little bit about Venice).

Hey, everyone’s gone to Africa. Not to be outdone by The Telegraph, The FT has its own Africa special. There’s nothing missing from Michelle Jana Chan’s safari in Botswana. There’s flowery prose (“A splinter of sunrise winked over the baked salt horizon”), there’s deep insight (“For it is harder today than ever in history to find a place without people.”) and there’s suspense (“My tracker, Mogale, leant out of his seat to look down at the paw prints in the sand. “Leopard.” He flicked his finger forward. “Going this way.” My pulse quickened.”) They didn’t find anything though, but as Michelle so astutely points out, “For it is not about what happens here, but the anticipation of what might.” Also in the FT, Andrew Mueller (good week for  music journalists getting travel pieces) goes to Addis Ababa and does little more than walk around the market in Merkato. To round off Africa, Gavin Kallmann takes a train through Senegal.  There’s also a couple of Obama related bits about Washington and Chicago.

The NYT goes to Washington of the mountain variety, climbing up Mt Washington in the snow  and extreme cold. Elsewhere, their ski report focusses on Taos Valley in New Mexico, which  isn’t perhaps one of the better known US resorts in Europe. This year Taos has lifted its ban on snowboarders, leaving only three US resorts that ban boarders – Mad River Glen, Deer Valley and Alta.
